Leave a network and remove a device
Leave a network or organization, delete your device and disconnect your computer — and see what each action affects.
You can end your relationship with a network at four different levels. Which one to pick depends on what you want to close:
| Action | What stops | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Disconnect temporarily | Only that computer's connection; you can turn it back on | On the computer: tailscale down |
| Delete the device | That device's record on the network | Panel, Devices |
| Leave the network | All your access to that network | Panel, the network's Members section |
| Leave the organization | Your access to every network in the organization | Panel, the organization's People tab |
Disconnect on the computer
To turn the connection off for a while and come back to the same network later:
tailscale downTo reconnect, tailscale up is enough; you don't need a new key. On Linux, put sudo in front of these commands.
To sign the computer out of this network completely:
tailscale logoutA signed-out device needs a new key from the panel to connect again. It stays in the panel's list; to remove the record as well, delete it as described below.
Delete a device
On the network page, in Devices, click Delete device on the device's row and confirm. The device can no longer connect to the network.
- With the member role you can only delete your own devices; network admins can delete any device.
- Deleting can't be undone. To connect the device again, create a new key in the panel.
- If an admin deletes one of your personal devices, you're notified by email. A labeled device is a machine and is no longer counted as yours, so deleting one sends no notification.
Leave a network
Open the network's members section
From the network page's menu, go to Members and find your own row.
Leave
Click Leave network. The dialog lists what will change when you leave: the devices that will be signed out, the people groups you'll be removed from, and your unused device keys that will be revoked. Confirm.
When you leave:
- Your access to this network is cut off immediately; your personal devices on it are signed out.
- You're removed from this network's people groups.
- The device keys you created for this network and never used are revoked: they can't enroll a new device after you leave.
- Your organization membership stays. To come back, an admin has to add you to the network again.
Leave an organization
On the organization's page, in the People tab, click Leave organization on your own row and confirm.
- Your access to every network in the organization is cut off immediately, and your personal devices are signed out.
- This can't be undone: you'll need a new invite to rejoin.
- Your own nixscale account and your own organization aren't affected.
In some cases you can't leave:
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You're the organization's founder | The founder can't leave the organization. |
| You're the only owner | Give someone else the owner role first. |
| The organization has a suspended network | Access can't be revoked on a suspended network, so leaving isn't possible at that moment. |
| The organization is suspended | The leave button stays disabled until the suspension is lifted. |
| Your role is Member | Only owners and admins see the People tab; ask an organization admin to remove you. |
