Check your connection

Confirm your device is really connected, read its addresses and reach a server by its device name.

For:MemberAdminOwnerUpdated September 16, 2026

After running the connection command, you can check two places: the device itself and the panel. The commands are the same on macOS, Windows and Linux and only read status; they don't need sudo.

Check on the device

Terminal
tailscale status

The first line shows your own device, its address starting with 100. and its state. The lines below are the other devices you can reach.

To print just your own address:

Terminal
tailscale ip -4

Addresses on the network come from 100.64.0.0/10; every device also gets an IPv6 address starting with fd7a:.

Check in the panel

In Devices on the network page, confirm your device shows as Online. The list doesn't refresh on its own: click Refresh to see a newly connected device.

Reach another device

If a rule grants you access to the device you want, you can reach it in two ways:

  1. By address

Use the address starting with 100. from tailscale status, for example ssh [email protected].

  2. By device name

You can also reach devices on your nixscale network by name. The full name works everywhere and looks like <device>.<network-id>.net.nixscale.com, for example ssh [email protected]. If your operating system applies the search domain, the short name (ssh user@office-gateway) works too. Device names appear in the tailscale status output.

To test connectivity (if the rules allow ICMP):

Terminal
ping 100.112.0.2

On macOS and Linux, stop ping with Ctrl + C.
